My name is Josh and I’m scared. Why you ask? Because personal projects are scary propositions. Nick the Knight (NtK) is a long-time dream project that has materialized just enough to be both exciting and frightening. Exciting because the ideas are becoming a reality and frightening because it isn’t complete at this time and I don’t know if it will be a success.
“Success” is another funny word because it has many gradations. There are several things that would make this project a success. First and foremost is completion. Finishing the game, even if no one plays it, is a win for myself and my two teammates, Jay and Chris. Not only is finishing satisfying, but the human growth required to push through to completion is non-trivial. We will be better humans after finishing the project.
A second success milestone would be engagement from others. Believe it or not, this project isn’t a delusional pursuit of wealth (you’d have to be delusional to try to become rich through game development). Instead, it stems from a desire to uncover magic in the world through storytelling. The stories unfold in NtK through puzzles, dialogue, and mystery, all with the hope that a community experiences a “true” story — true in the sense that it connects with the human journey.
This engagement I am hopefully referring to would be both here on nicktheknight.com, through our Discord channel, and through playing the actual game (alpha signups are available to play through Steam).
The third and final success metric would be sales once the game has launched. I’m hopeful that the heart and effort put into developing this game results in a satisfied player base.
Regardless of the final “success” of the game, on behalf of the myself and the whole team, we’re very excited to have you as part of our community. Please comment, email, post in Discord, or sign up for the Alpha (or if you’ve gotten to this post after launch, consider buying the game).
